Week 29

Hi and Welcome to this Weeks
Cafe News in May 2008

Bearing in mind the bad Bank Holiday weekend weather here in the UK our Blog of the Week feature this week is by our member Omshanti and her amazing storm with huge hailstones! Keep writing your blogs and you may be our next featured Blog of the Week on Creative Cafe.

I have found this site which says it will pay you for your blog posts. I have signed up but don't know how it works yet. The fact that I hardly ever write any blogs may also be a disadvantage! But for some of you who blog a lot it could be worth a try so check it out at:

Saw this site :
"How Can I Recycle This" which includes creative ideas for reusing and recycling random stuff. I noticed a post on there about making art from bottle tops for example.

I also saw this sweet video of a baby duck feeding fish which I have added here for your entertainment.
The 'Music You Like' discussion featuring members favourite music videos is still proving popular HERE
I have also put up a quiz on some Rock and Roll questions HERE The Map I put up HERE is still proving popular and if you havn't already then do add yourself at the link above. And our member Anna has also added an interesting new discussion for members to trade their art and crafts HERE

We had some fun not long ago in a discussion writing a story composed of one sentence each. A site called One Word HERE asks you to write for one minute on one word and then submit your answer. You don't have time to think just to write!

As usual add your own News, vote for the Blog of the Week and ask for any photos you want featured in the Spotlight in the relevant discussions. And if there is anything you want to see on Creative Cafe please do let us know. We really want members to feel you have a say in decisions that are made on this site.

Please don't forget to support our fantastic sellers in Creative Cafe Salesrooms where you can buy some lovely gifts or treats for yourself.

Finally here is a bit of a time waster for you! The Scribbler lets you draw a simple line drawing and then turns it into a scribble for you! Check it out HERE

And remember.

Latest from Wilma (aka Julia):

Just a little bit of my news.....

Ive been asked to host a craft party at a residential home where my sis in law works after she took some of my cards that I had made for her to work. Her boss liked my crafts so much she asked if I could do a craft party for the staff, residents and families so Ive got that in 2 weeks time and I am also helping with a charity day in aid of shop mobility (Gateshead) this Sat at the Metro Centre where I have made and donated a variety of crafted items to raise funds to keep the shop mobility staff in jobs as they are a charity and not funded by the government so every penny counts!

Hope you all have a very good week.

Blog of the Week June 2008 Week 30

Our Blog of the Week features member Maragert Hamilton who made the adorable bear above and the lovely quilts below. Margaret is very talented and turns her hand to a range of different crafts. She explains how this came about in her interesting blog below:

My Crafting by Margaret Hamilton of Slackstitches:

Is a vast and varied thing. Through the years I have picked up the ability to do sewing, knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, applique, patchwork, quilting. Most of these skills I learned from my mother. (Although my grandmother and other adults have played their part.) Aparently when my nearest sister was born I ran around the flat fetching nappies etc saying "me do". It seems to have stuck, as whenever my mother learned a new needlwork skill I insisted she taught me.

My crafting does seem to be a mood thing. Maybe I should call it inspiration led? Whichever, what I create depends on the way I feel and which technique seems right for the time. Although I can do custom work as required e.g the cardigans I do for my gentlemen customers, when I am creating something for the first time I have to have gathered inspiration. This inspiration can take a long time to gather.
Take an example. Last year I was looking for a new bear theme. Something that fitted with my touch textile therapy type theme ( does anyone follow that thought?). I started to also think about crazy patchwork and the threads started to intertwine. Some months later there is a shoebox with the calico shapes that make up the bear, scraps of fabrics and embellishments in it. Some of the calico pieces have been " crazy patchworked " but the thought process has not completed as to how the final assembly and embellishing will be done. The box will sit on the shelf in my work room till the inspiration causes me to lift it down and move on. I do not stress about this as this process allows me to know that this is my creation, not a copy of someone elses, and eventually will make the creation of other variations a quicker process. I realise that patchwork bears have been done by others but there is always a new twist to old themes.
This is what make the products of us individual artists/crafters different from the mass produced items made in the far east and sold in chain stores. This is why our prices sometimes seem a bit expensive to people. But you are truely buying a piece of original artwork that contains a little bit of the artist in it.
Just for variation I also create in the kitchen and the garden. Never happy without something for my fingers to do.

You can find some of Margaret's excellent work on Sale in
Creative Cafe Salesrooms HERE
and visit her profile page HERE

I have found this site which says it will pay you for your blog posts. I have signed up but don't know how it works yet.In fact I don't qualify as I hardly ever write any blogs! In order to be accepted to the PPP Marketplace, your blog must be at least 30 days old with 10 pre-existing posts written within the past three months with no more than a 30 day gap in writing during that time. For some of you who blog a lot it could be worth a try so check it out at:

For anyone who fancies trying their hand at soapmaking this site HERE seems to give very good detailed instructions along with photos as well as the advantages of handmade over commercial soaps.

This site HERE gives you a panoramic view of a library complete with fantastically painted ceiling but does anyone know where the building is?

There is still time to enter the Rock and Roll quiz as
I will put up the answers to the questions later in the week HERE

This week I have this video of some animal sand art which is filmed to look simple but must be really hard to do:

Blog of the Week 31

Instead of the Blog of the Week this week I am putting up Richard Burton's new original Creative Cafe Theme Song for you to listen to below. The lyrics were written mainly by our member Jay.
Find more music like this on Creative Cafe We want to know what you think of it and if you will volunteer to sing on it?! For those interested in volunteering to sing on the Theme Song Richard says:
"I think people would need to have software installed that enables them to record their voice through a microphone (either internal or external) onto their PC.
I have something called "Andrea Voice Centre" that comes with the sound card. I use an external mic.
What I need essentially is a .WAV file of each individual singing along to the annoyingly chirpy, but amazingly simple chorus. As many different voices as possible. I can then use the wonders of Ableton Live to combine these .WAV files into a multiple voiced chorus.
(.WAV is a file format for sound. I think this will work, but I might need a different format. Let's go with this for the time being.)
Sounds good in theory, doesn't it?"

Not being technically minded myself I am not sure about this WAV file business but hope plenty of you members do understand and can contribute.
You can leave your comments on the discussion in the theme song group HERE
and on Richard's page HERE

There are a lot of lovely art and crafts to chose from in the Salesrooms now.

HERE is an unusual site featuring lifesize bears made out of pine needles! Check it out!

If you have time on your hands and want a game to play this week how about Guess the Google HERE You are shown a group of Google images and then have to guess what the search term was to bring up those images. A real timewaster!

The Rock and Roll quiz was won by Azzami which wasn't hard as his was the only entry!

In case you still have time on your hands HERE is a list of 1000 books to read before you die. I used to read a lot but have to say a lot of these titles look unfamiliar to me. Has anyone read them at all?!

And if anyone either doesn't like or can't afford photoshop there is a review of some free alternatives HERE

And finally here is a video on the making of an amazing Venetian glass horse sculpture:

Blog of the Week 32

Ever since we opened Creative Cafe our member Mandy Lawrence has been contributing with pictures, cards, blogs, in the discussions and groups and with friendly comments and all sorts of creative contributions. Mandy has also been writing her own blog called Mandy Lifeboats Ahoy on a regular basis. Many of you are friends with Mandy on Creative Cafe because she reaches out and gets to know people. She is friendly and warm. What many of you may not know is that Mandy has been struggling with serious mental health problems for some time. Last week she went into a unit for treatment and has become the first person to blog about her experiences from inside a psychiatric facility. The details are below. But what I want to say is that although we don't focus specifically on disability much on Creative Cafe we are a charitable group seeking to support people with disabilities. Many of our members have physical and mental health disabilities. And yet we see here with Mandy a clear example of how someone can rise above their disability to remain creative and contribute a lot to the world. Have a look at Mandys photos and her blog and see how much she has been able to achieve.

EXCLUSIVE June 13: 'Mental illness is petrifying' - day-to-day life as an inpatient on a psychiatric unit is being documented on an internet blog by Mandy Lawrence,

by Adam James.....

Day-to-day life as an inpatient on a psychiatric unit is being documented on an internet blog by a woman diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Mandy Lawrence, aged 45, was admitted into a six-bed NHS psychiatric unit in Luton, Bedfordshire, on Friday last week and is writing about her experience.

The blog is believed to be the first by a patient while an inpatient on a mental health unit.

In the candid blog Ms Lawrence describes her crisis in the days leading up to her admission to Oakley Court run by Bedfordshire and Luton Mental Health and Social Care Partnership.
On admission she writes of her worries of being prescribed a new anti-psychotic, its side effects, ward conditions, staff, other patients and her struggle with anxiety. Anecdotes range from consultations with her psychiatrist to watching European Championship football with other patients.
To post on the blog Ms Lawrence has been using the laptop of another patient.
The blog, called mandylifeboatsahoy, receives postings from co-bloggers with an interest in mental health.
Ms Lawrence says she has had mental health problems since a teenager. "Throughout that time I have had episodes of mania or depression which would floor me,” she writes.

Hi and Welcome to this Weeks
Cafe News in June 2008

Mandy Lawrence is in our Blog of the Week spot this week as she has been making history writing her blog from inside a psychiatric unit. She is believed to be the first person to have done this. Keep writing your blogs and yours may be Blog of the Week next week.

I get the Google alert and keep in touch with the world of Graffiti and always see the argument going on between those who want to cover all graffiti up and those who want it enshrined as valuable street art. A new approach HERE called
Graffiti Park aims to legitimise things by :- organizing legal spots by negotiating with the council and the property owner- Running public workshops
- Hosting events, such as competitions, festivals and exhibitions- Offering sponsorship to artists- Commercial opportunities for artists- Hosting meeting forums. Graffiti Park is still in the conceptual planning stages and invites you to drop them a line to find out more.

There seems to be some concern about whether the credit crunch and looming recession will kill green, ethical and fairtrade shopping. This article HERE
looks at the figures and asks for your comments on how your own shopping habits will be affected.

Speaking about shopping. I have been buying in
Creative Cafe Salesrooms myself! First of all I got my Mum a beautiful glass dish and placemats by Jan Simpson for her birthday last weekend. These are really lovely and she was thrilled when she opened the parcel. Secondly my watch broke a while ago and I needed a new one so decided to order one from Rebecca who runs Basillawerks. None of the ones she had in stock were my size so she custom made me one especially. You can see it in the featured Pearl Elegance photo in the Spotlight. It is really georgeous and I have not been able to take it off since it arrived! I wholeheartedly recommend both the glass by Jan and the watches by Rebecca as well as bath salts by Omshanti, candles by Barb, exploding card boxes by Julia ,cards by Aileen Clarke and all the other purchases I have made in the Salesrooms since we opened. We have many lovely things in there now so when you are looking for a gift or want a treat for yourself do buy from Creative Cafe Salesrooms

Looking for some things to do with the children this summer? The tree hugging family site offers all kinds of projects including: Build A Solar Cooker, Candied Flowers, Homemade Popsicles, Homemade-stickers, Organic gardening with kids and Plant-maze.

Below is what is advertised as the Coolest Picture Ever. You can see it in very large HERE

Finally for this weeks Cafe News on the subject of Money. If you don't have any at least you can look at some and all the funky creative things people do with it on this Money Money Money blog.

Blog of the Week 32

Our blog of the Week this week is written by Tracy who is a relative newcomer to our Creative Cafe group and who makes fantastic decorated gourds.. For those of you who havn't got to know Tracy yet here is an extract from the first blog she wrote:

As this is my first "blog" for this site, let me explain what you may read...
I try to live a simple, homesteading kind of lifestyle. That includes gardening and perserving all that food I've grown, raising animals and lots of homemade stuffs from laundry soap, cleaners to baked bread and other goodies. It's an intregal role I play as I skip joyfully through life. You get to get a peek into my day without having to get your feet muddy (or otherwise dirty)! *smiles*

This week Tracy has written a blog entitled
Guido the Bunnie & Mr. Fungus which is full of wonderful news from her home. And here it is:

"There has been quite a bit of activity in the yard.

Mr. Fungus Amungus stopped in for a visit and decimated my gourd crop. I didn’t want him to spread his particular brand of love in the soil so all the plants went into the burn barrel. The funeral pyre was a site to behold and many tears were shed in honor of the brave gourd plants.

The chickens have been holding a roost-in while confined to the run.

I thought they were being rather decent and peaceful about the whole thing I noticed my broccoli plants had been mercilessly de-leafed. There were a few brave souls left so I carefully weeded around them. The next morning they were knocked off. I unwittingly blew their cover.

My informant, (Stubby the Rooster) told me the chickens had hired Guido the Bunnie to send me a message. Mr. Bunnie and his fuzzy-tailed family better cut it out! I’m about ready to send a return message via Ella the Pants. She’s had a taste of rabbit and has been howling for more. I, being the peaceful love hippie that I am wouldn’t allow such doggish behavior. I’m seriously reconsidering... I’ve underestimated the power of chicken.

In other gardening news, the peas are doing so-so. The rutabagas and cabbage seeds left town. The lettuce, carrots, spinach and potatoes are spotty. The good news is I’ll have a bang-up crop of tomatoes and green beans! The darling pepper plants are shivering. The temperature had dropped into the 70’s (low 50’s at night) with a nice chilly wind over their leaves. They aren’t happy with about it, as they prefer hot, hot and hotter.

Can you believe the ducks are 7 weeks old? They are about the size of a chicken and still growing. Here are a few fun quack facts. The females of the waterfowl species develop a quack. The males do not. There is a reason duck farts are called duck farts. When a duck does its business, it makes a farting noise. Chickens on the other hand are silent but deadly. And lastly, ducks love mud.

I can tell the three males, Oack, Mack, and Lack apart. Oack has huge feet. If he grows into them he’s going to be a duck that really wants to be turkey! Mack sports the average Rouen colors while Lack is heavy on the brown. I believe were slipped a mickey-duck (or would that be a Daffy or Donald). First, this duck does not sport the Rouen colors and is may be a male. I’ve never sexed a duck before and honestly not inclined to learn how. I’ll let time unfold the mystery.

My friend Bernita flew in for a visit yesterday from California! We’ve known each other a year to year and half. We still catch ourselves pinching each other to make sure we’re real! She’s staying at the Gourdess Inn. Oh you know the place, where the eggs are fresh from the hen and there’s a good chance you’ll eat rabbit on the hoof. Just kidding!!

I’m still working on Rex’s Father’s Day present. Here’s the latest picture of it:

I told you it was time intensive!

Well that wraps it up from my little patch of paradise.
Have a Wonder-Filled day and enjoy the journey!

Cafe News Week 32

Hi and Welcome to this Weeks
Cafe News in June/July 2008

First for our US members you will be celebrating 232 years of freedom and liberty this week on July 4th so I have put up a fireworks photo above taken at the Statue of Liberty to mark this occasion. Hope you all have a good day.

Ok so I have given up on the Blog of the Week feature! Well sorree but since joining and becoming a bit of an Endrecard addict I have learned that blogs get written if not everyday then most days and so we need more than one featured a week. So now I have put the latest 5 to feature all the time on this Main page just below the featured photos. The discussions are below these featured blogs but we don't seem to have had so many discussions up recently. Please feel free to start and join in discussion as well. The more the merrier.

Anyway let me tell you more about my new Entrecard addiction! It started a week ago and at first I wasn't that much interested. But now I am hooked! I have been going round clicking on blogs and dropping my card and reading the latest that all sorts of people are writing. A couple are even members of Creative Cafe already ( Hi Chris and Lizzie!). It has increased our traffic as well. If you want to join or communicate via Entrecard then here is my widget.
What happens is you sign up and get a widget like this one and post it on your blog or your Creative Cafe page.

Another thing I am wanting to change is the RSS feed you see on the bottom left side of this Main page. This was put in before we opened and I don't remember where we got it from but it doesn't seem to have updated much since we opened last November! So I am hoping for something better to put in place. This could either be another RSS feed or something different entirely. I have put up a discussion for your opinions on what we should have in that space and will be glad to hear any ideas you may have. One thing I have noticed visiting these blogs is that some people have a mini slideshow gadget featuring their work for sale and I am wondering if such a widget could be made to feature work for sale in our Creative Cafe Salesrooms perhaps? I will have do more research on this to see if it is possible. Please add your ideas about this to the discussion.

For those of us with mental health disabilities news of the terrible state of mental health wards in the UK is not a surprise but I do find it shocking when the new president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists says they are dangerous places. Read an article about this in the Guardian HERE.
I put up a blog on a crochet Dr Who Dalek pattern but for those who are more Star Wars fans is this creative concoction

Yes a R2D2 and it is a chocolate cake! You can even see exactly how it is made HERE and if you live anywhere around New York way can order one to eat!

Finally still in New York, I am not sure who else share's my fascination with Graffiti and Street art but do have a look at these pictures from the Freedom Tunnel on this site HERE
Amazing what creativity goes on in all levels and places in our societies.

JULY 2008 EXTENDED

Hi and Welcome to this Weeks
Cafe News in July 2008

I am going to be moving house in the next few weeks so I will be busy with packing and will add items of Cafe News when I can rather than doing one new lot of news each Monday. Please keep checking in for the latest as well as contributing with blogs and discussions and sending each other comments. And now here is the rest of this weeks Cafe News:

First of all HERE is an awareness test! I certainly didn't see anything myself the first time I watched!

And here is another kind of test!

You Are Best Described By...

Farbstudie Quadrate
By Wassily Kandinsky

For those of you who are keen on writing a site called Booksie HERE says "Why Join? Booksie offers you a global platform for sharing your writing, getting read, and getting noticed. Booksie enables you to:Publish, tag, and share your writing globally Upload mp3 audio versions of your work. Read and listen to the work of other writers from around the world. Receive comments and interact with readers Develop a fanbase. Get noticed and promote yourself and your writing.

Speaking of writing and stories Here you can see a 450 word story by an unnamed author where every word begins with the letter W! It begins:
Winnie and Walter
“Warm weather, Walter! Welcome warm weather! We were wishing winter would wane, weren’t we?” “We were well wearied with waiting,” whispered Waiter wearily. Wan, white, woe-begone was Walter; wayward, wilful, worn with weakness, wasted, waxing weaker whenever winter’s wild, withering winds were wailing. Wholly without waywardness was Winifred, Walter’s wise, womanly watcher, who, with winsome, wooing way, was well-beloved...

This video is of an amazing woman.
She was born without arms. Her mother wanted to throw her into the sea after her birth, but her father decided to keep her as a pet. Their marriage was arranged by their parents. Lee's family was very poor. He didn't expect to get married in his life. So, he was happy to marry her even though she was with no arms. Lee said she didn't bring any trouble to him at all. Instead, she brought up 3 children and did all the housework on her own. This tutorial site seems to provide a lot of useful information including this post for designers on 99 Free Canvas, Paper, Paint, and Metal Textures. And here is a funny elephant!

There is discussion going on currently about Disability Dolls and their potential benefits for children with physical disabilities to identify with dolls which look like them. Or are they just taking political correctness too far? This article HERE shows picures of the dolls and invites comments.

As the world increasingly focuses on sustainable initiatives, green architecture is a booming industry. Designers are being ever more creative and this site HERE shows 15 Future Wonders of Green Technology: From Spinning Towers to Seawater Greenhouses.

There are a lot of real flowers around at this time of year but if you want to be creative and make some paper roses HERE are some clear picture instructions.

Finally this site "100 Places to Go for Good Answers Online"
gives a list of alternative sites to Wikipedia where you can get information and answers on any questions you have

Please do support
Creative Cafe Salesrooms. anyway. We have many lovely things in there now so when you are looking for a gift or want a treat for yourself do buy from our site.

As usual add your own News and ask for any photos you want featured in the Spotlight in the relevant discussions. And if there is anything you want to see on Creative Cafe please do let us know. We really want members to feel you have a say in decisions that are made on this site.
