Let your imagination run free

Where do you work from, do you have a certain room in which you can work better and get things done or do you just have your artwork/handicraft items all around the house?

At the moment we have a certain corner for all our materials but I would love to create a workroom as I feel we would be a lot more organised and get more done!!

Welcome Princess2008! Hope to hear a lot from you about what you do. Also interested in the traditional sugared almonds. :)

Hi, I suppose I am quite lucky I do have a room to myself. The computer is in there, so I have music all the time and I don't have to keep changing the disc. I have a work bench for chainmaille and I persuaded my husband to put this old table in there too, so I can bead or just make a clutter!!!

I do tidy it all up every now and then - the trouble is when you start working again it all comes out and its in a mess with 1/2 hr. I spend ages sometimes, wondering where on earth I have put something!!!

Thanks omshanti, we are quite new and actually I shouldnt take all the credit as my fiance is the artistic one, he can literally create anything and he makes the hand-made tulles/favours for weddings and christenings, he also makes his own candles for favours and decorations and we hope to be adding to the items we can offer.

Louise - I really can relate to that, we have just a corner at the moment and I spent an hour or more the other evening tidying it and organising it, but we had an order for 50 pink christening favours and everything was pulled out and sprawled around the floor.

I thiuk even if we work from home, we should have a dedicated work space so as to concentrate ouir minds on real work instead of having our minds wandering around and running to the TV or fridge.

I would love that at the moment but unfortunately space wise it is not possible, I can not wait for the day when we can have our own workroom, its something that will definately happen when we finish the building on our house until then were stuck with it ending up everywhere, sprawled round the floor and shouting at eachother because weve lost something!

Hi Princess,

Start small by having a small dedicated space - it doesn't need to be a room with doors. This dedicated space will keep your mind focus and your work tooks from walking away :) Good luck

I have a room decked out with shelving, work table, ironing board, sewing machine. Planning, preperation, sewing, cutting out etc all happen there but I also knit and sew when watching t.v. I do try to keep things tidy but being creative is an untidy process, or at least it is with me.

I have a garage for a studio, my partners studio is the dining room and the study is the office - however the entire downstairs of the house is regularly taken over with all our junk - we do not seem to be able to contain it all within the one place. Have finally managed to ban my partner from painting on the kitchen table - he seems to like it there, I however do not like having the entire kitchen covered with acrylic paint - have managed to just about contain him to his dining room - but every so often he sneaks it out past me and I suddenly find the kitchen yet again full of pastels and oil paints etc. Usually manage to get one back on him by filling every other available space with glass and jewellery findings etc - makes for a very messy household, specially when the kids get in from school and fill the rest of the house with toy cars, light sabres and discarded bits of food - one did try bringing his bicycle in through the house the other day but was very quickly dissuaded.

Same here. My work has to fit in with everything else in the front room. I NEED A STUDIO!!! It can be a serious deterrent to creativity. but, I like the flexibility of being able to tend to other stuff, and to work late sometimes. I like that my family are nearby, or will be soon. But, I do feel that having a separate environment would help me take my work more seriously, be more professional. II will add a page from my book, 'I Am An Art Gallery' to illustrate my predicament! I like your picture Leslie. You may have a lot of stuff but it looks pretty organised to me.

I know that people may yearn for their own Studio but then they may miss the distractions in a main room. When I used to do my patchwork I had a special rug to sit on with it all around me and I could move the rug from place to place depending on my mood for quiet or for company. I knew someone who was very keen on photography and developing their own films. This involved a lot of messing around with chemicals and black out curtains and all sorts. For years they carried on with no special place to work and stayed enthusiastic. Then when they got a special room where all their equipment was laid out especially for them they lost interest and hardly went near the room! I suppose this is a reminder of the saying 'Make sure you get what you want before you stop wanting it'!

You are right, Jill. I do acknowledge that I like all the stimulation from working in a multifunctional room. I like having the TV on in the background, my Buddhist altar across the doorway, my plants that need a drink, fully equipped kitchen for knocking up good lunches, endless cups of coffee, etc. Perhaps this all ties in with your creativity discussion, 'how does it happen'? It could be that the more stimulation we have to contend with the more neurons get sparked up, increasing the flow of creativity! Perhaps a place kitted out for one purpose only isn't as stimulating. I suppose one doesn't know for sure until one has experienced both. I do remember, though, back at college 1997-2001, I rarely went to college to work. I preferred to work on my own at home, amongst all my clutter!

PS any idea why my jpg image above come up as a button, and not a picture?

Hi Leslie

You seem to have loaded your pic in as an attachment. You can copy and paste the pics in some places or use 'all you can upload' site to get the copy and paste code to put up pics.

I agree with everything you say by the way. Including the endless cups of coffee. No I mean ESPECIALLY the endless cups of coffee!
