Extended Description

The New Music Awards is a UK-wide competition run by the PRS Foundation.

It offers a £50,000 cash prize to help individuals, music groups, arts organisations, and music venues to create, compose and perform a groundbreaking new piece of original music. It aims to seek out and reward artists who are willing to take musical risks and produce creative, inspiring and adventurous work.

For the purposes of the competition, "new" music is defined as:

  • New in a "technical" sense, i.e. has not yet been created.
  • New in a "boundary-pushing" sense.

Latest Information

Entries must be made by 08 January 2010.

A long-list of candidates will be announced in February and given until the end of March to provide additional information.

The winner will be revealed in September and given until December 2011 to complete and perform their work.

Key Criteria

The Awards are open to entries from:

  • Individuals.
  • Music groups and organisations.
  • Music venues.
  • Schools.
  • Colleges.
  • Arts organisations.

Entries can be in any genre as long as they "push boundaries, take creative risks, and lead to exceptional work".

Ideas must:

  • Be for an original piece of new music that is yet to be created.
  • Be ambitious, inspiring, creative and of the highest possible quality.
  • Challenge the boundaries of musical performance in the UK today.
  • Have at least one guaranteed live public performance in the UK.
  • Have the potential to create a lasting musical impact and reach a significant number of people.
  • Involve music creators (songwriters, composers or producers) that are based and working in the UK.

The winning entry must result in some sort of live performance of the piece. This can be in any media (performed live at a venue or special location, broadcast on the radio, TV or internet), but must be publicly accessible. The live performance can be presented in any format and collaborations with other art forms are encouraged.

Eligible Expenditure

Costs associated with creating, composing, producing and performing an original musical piece.

Restrictions

The competition cannot support ongoing projects or collaborations - entries must be related to new, original pieces of work.

Further Information

The New Music Award takes place every two years, so the next call for entries will be in late 2011.

Application Procedure

Entry forms can be downloaded from the PRS Foundation website.

Along with an entry form, applicants should provide the following information:

  • The project concept - what the idea will sound like and how it will be created.
  • The project details - who will compose the idea, when, where and who will perform the piece.
  • Biographies of key personnel involved with the project.
  • A draft budget showing how the £50,000 prize will be spent.

Contact the PRS Foundation for further information.
